Phenylhydrazine is a pale yellow oily liquid with an m.p. of 19.8°C and a b.p. of 173.5°C at 13.33 kPa. Its refractive index at 20°C (n₂₀ᴰ) is 1.608, and its relative density is 1.0978 (at 20°C). It is slightly soluble in water and petroleum ether, but readily dissolves in ethanol, diethyl ether, chloroform, and benzene. Phenylhydrazine can volatilize along with steam and tends to darken upon exposure to air. Phenylhydrazine hydrochloride [CAS No. 59-88-1] is a solid with a melting point ranging from 250°C to 254°C (decomposition).
Phenylhydrazine is used in pesticide production to synthesize key intermediates for organophosphorus insecticides, such as the 1-phenylaminourea intermediate for trichlorfon, as well as the pyridine intermediate 1-phenyl-3,6-dihydroxypyridine. It also serves as an intermediate in the production of novel fungicides like oxadixyl and fenamidone. Additionally, it can be employed as a precursor in the synthesis of pesticides including mesosulfuron-methyl and oxathiin.
