2,6-Dimethylaniline is a pale yellow liquid with a boiling point of 216–217°C, a melting point of 10–12°C, and a refractive index n₂₀ᴰ of 1.5590. Its relative density is 0.973, it is insoluble in water but readily soluble in alcohols and ethers, and dissolves in hydrochloric acid.
2,6-Dimethylaniline is an intermediate used in the production of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and veterinary drugs. In the agrochemical industry, it serves as a key raw material for synthesizing highly effective fungicides such as methomyl, furametpyr, furamethamide, carbaryl, fenamiphos, thiram, as well as efficient, low-toxicity, and selectively acting herbicides like isobutylazine, dimethylamine, and imazamethabenz. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is employed in the manufacture of anesthetic drugs including lidocaine hydrochloride, bupivacaine hydrochloride, encainide hydrochloride, toquibromonium, and rhododendrine. Additionally, it also acts as a crucial starting material for producing the veterinary drug piperonyl.
