Pure product is a colorless orthorhombic crystal. Its aqueous solution has a pungently salty taste. Industrial-grade product appears as white or slightly yellowish small crystals. It is soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol.
It can be used as a fertilizer, as well as a flux, a fabric fire retardant, and in medicine as a salting-out agent, osmotic pressure regulator, and more.
