The pure product appears as a white crystalline solid. Melting point: 118–119°C (120°C). Solubility: 77 g/100 mL in diethyl ether, 153 g/100 mL in ethanol, 0.5 g/100 mL in n-hexane, 6.2 g/100 mL in toluene, 4.9 g/100 mL in xylene, and 0.0825 g/100 mL in water. The industrial-grade product has a melting point of 99–107°C and emits a phenol-like odor.
Hormone-type selective herbicides are easily absorbed and translocated through both roots and leaves. They are used in fields planted with gramineous crops such as rice to control a variety of annual or perennial broadleaf weeds, as well as certain monocotyledonous weeds, after emergence. These herbicides are particularly effective against broadleaf weeds and cyperus rotundus, but show no activity against grassy weeds like barnyardgrass. The recommended application rate is 0.28 to 2.25 kg of active ingredient per hectare. However, they may negatively affect broadleaf crops such as cotton, soybeans, melons, and vegetables.
