The pure product appears as a colorless, oily liquid with a slight fragrance. Its boiling point ranges from 83 to 84°C under a pressure of 26.66 × 10⁻³ Pa, and at 125°C under 133.32 Pa. The vapor pressure is 1.867 × 10⁻² Pa (at 20°C), while its refractive index, measured at 20°C using the D-line of sodium light, is 1.4981. The relative density is 1.116 to 1.118 (at 20°C). It is miscible with acetone, ethanol, and xylene, and readily dissolves in petroleum ether. However, its solubility in water at room temperature is extremely low, at just 0.004%. Above 50°C, the compound becomes unstable; it is also sensitive to both acids and bases but remains stable under light exposure. Under aqueous conditions or in dilute acidic environments, the compound slowly undergoes hydrolysis. Even trace amounts of moisture present during storage can accelerate this decomposition process, ultimately converting the substance into highly toxic tetraethyl thiopyrophosphate. In industrial applications, the product typically appears as a pale brownish-brown liquid.
It is a non-systemic insecticide that effectively controls a variety of pests, including Lepidoptera and Homoptera species.
